I’ve been working in helpdesk for about three years now and I’m starting to feel stuck. I keep hearing that getting a CompTIA Security+ is the logical next step, but honestly, I’m not sure if I’m ready to dive into something that seems so broad. I’ve done some basic network troubleshooting here and there, but the jump feels big. Has anyone else made this move from a general support role?
I moved from general help desk work into security about a year ago and the jump felt big at first yet I kept it practical I mapped exam topics to real tasks I already do like monitoring logs dealing with access and asset inventory and it began to feel doable
Yes I did the move from help desk and I found a plan that helped start with basic networking then CompTIA Security+ building on what you already know
CompTIA Security+ is broad so the stress might be real maybe you could chase a narrower path first like phishing response or endpoint hardening and then loop back to the bigger cert with that momentum
Maybe the move is not about a single cert but about building a habit of thinking like a defender in every ticket you handle and using that mindset to study Security+
Have you tried a smaller target like a vendor cert or a lab based study to test the waters before going for Security+
That leap will feel less scary if you set weekly tiny wins you can actually hit while you keep helping users today and you keep your curiosity alive toward CompTIA Security+
Think about the kind of role you want in a few years and let that shape what you study now rather than chasing the broad label of CompTIA Security+
