Lately I’ve been waking up around 3 AM and just can’t seem to drift back off, no matter how tired I feel. My mind just starts racing about the next day. I’ve tried the usual things like cutting out late coffee and keeping the room dark, but it hasn’t really helped. I’m starting to wonder if this is just a weird phase or if there’s something specific about my wind-down routine that’s actually working against me.
That 3 am wake can feel endless, like your mind flips on and wont switch off. Maybe a tiny wind down tweak like a few minutes of slow breaths or a boring book could help quiet the brain, but it is easy to worry about how long it lasts.
From a nervous system point of view this could be hyperarousal at night and a shift in your circadian rhythm. Try keeping a simple sleep log for a week and note caffeine timing, screen exposure in the evening, and morning light. Small changes in routine may add up.
Maybe what wakes you is a dream you remember, not the wind down at all. If you wake with thoughts about tomorrow you might try a plan for the next day that you leave outside the bed.
What if the issue isnt about the wind down at all but about pacing your day and your expectations around sleep could a different approach to morning light or daily structure shift the dynamic?
Not sure the usual fixes apply here Some nights the brain runs a marathon for reasons we can almost guess but not pin down and sleep just isnt a tidy equation.
From a writing or readerly habit angle the night can feel like a scene that refuses to end Try different quiet activities before bed and see if the mood shifts away from the racing thoughts
Keep an eye on sleep pressure and nap timing If you nap late you might extend wakefulness at night If you need a change try a self guided wind down that feels boring even dull and see what happens
