I’ve been replaying some older RPGs lately and I keep running into the same thing—I get totally paralyzed trying to build my character. I’ll spend an hour staring at the skill tree, save, try a path, then reload. I’m curious if anyone else gets this weird anxiety about locking in a build, especially in games without a respec option. It kinda saps the fun out of just playing.
I totally relate I spend ages staring at the build tree and my save gets overwritten by nerves I want to pick the perfect path but I fear locking in the wrong way.
Maybe the anxiety comes from overvaluing optimal numbers when what you want is a story hero not a spreadsheet I find naming a rough vibe for the build and sticking to it helps.
Do you mean you want a game that gives you a free reset every few hours so you can experiment with the build without paying the price I thought the point was about staying flexible?
Not every player needs a flawless build to enjoy a game maybe the anxiety is more about the idea of control than the game itself.
I wonder if the real issue is that we treat build choices as identity instead of tools to explore a world let the class speak and see where the story goes.
From a writing stand the build becomes a character arc the skill tree a set of scenes you pick as you go the fun is in the micro decisions.
I tend to pick a simple baseline build and roll with it until the game pushes me to change I rarely reload unless the run collapses in a key moment
