So I’ve been trying to get better at color grading my travel videos, and I keep hearing about this thing called a color lookup table. I downloaded a free one that was supposed to give a warm, cinematic feel, but when I apply it, everything just looks kind of muddy and orange, especially the skin tones. I’m not sure if I’m applying it wrong, or if the LUT itself just isn’t a good match for my footage. Has anyone else run into this?
That warm color lookup table can feel magical but if your skin tones go muddy it might be a mismatch with your footage baseline like white balance and exposure. Try fixing white balance first and then test the LUT on a shot with neutral gray to see what shifts happen.
Color lookup table is a shortcut not a guarantee If the base film is graded in a different space the result goes off. Sometimes a warm LUT works best when you shoot flat with a neutral profile or apply it after adjusting contrast and color first
If skin tone looks orange try pulling back the red and orange channels after you apply the LUT and watch for the X Y balance. Some editors use a neutral lookup first then a second pass with a softer LUT.
Maybe the issue is not the look but what you expect from warm color A LUT is a tool not a rule a look is a mood not a fact so you might reframe the goal from perfect skin to readable color that helps the story.
Could be the footage not the LUT The warm vibe might be coded for a different lighting so not all cameras respond the same.
Make sure you pick a LUT designed for your camera profile and color space When in doubt test with a flat profile and use a neutral white balance before applying it This way you can separate grade from conversion.
