So we just got back from a week in Lisbon and I’m still thinking about the food. We had some incredible meals, but I keep wondering if we missed the real local experience by mostly eating in places from a popular travel app. Did we just end up in spots designed for tourists? How do you even tell the difference when you’re only in a city for a short time?
Lisbon still feels near even days later. We chased a hit list from a travel app and the table looked perfect but the kitchen had a glossy shine more than a story. I want a local experience that tastes like the neighborhood waking up at dawn, not a postcard.
I am skeptical that the app only shows the surface. The real local experience hides in the simple plate of caldo verde and the bread that sticks to your fingers.
To tell the difference look for small family run spots, chalkboard menus in Portuguese, listening to the banter of staff and locals at the bar. If the place feels organic and unforced you are probably closer to a local experience.
What counts as authentic changes with time and place. Maybe it means how you end up talking to strangers over a shared plate rather than the decor.
We missed the real Lisbon because we were chasing photos too much.
As a writer I notice pacing and texture of a meal in a local spot you get a rhythm not a curated tasting.
One could say the frame of tourist traps vs locals is fuzzy and that is part of the game.
