So I’ve been working in helpdesk for about three years now and I’m starting to feel a bit stuck. I keep hearing that getting a CompTIA Security+ is the next logical step for moving into something like security or even a junior sysadmin role, but I’m honestly wondering if it’s the right move for me right now. I see job postings asking for it, but I don’t actually know anyone who’s taken that specific path from where I’m standing.
Im in the same boat after three years in helpdesk the urge to chase a CompTIA Security+ is loud but I would pause and check if the move fits what you actually enjoy about the work
From a hiring perspective a CompTIA Security+ opens doors but it isnt a magic wand you still need hands on experience and a story that links your current duties to security tasks
Some people think a cert buys a job but the reality is you also need to show how you apply CompTIA Security+ knowledge in real problems on a ticket and incident response
Maybe the question should not be what cert you chase but what kind of work you want and can you start building that path today with the skills you already have
Security+ seems popular but you will see postings with it there are also places that want hands on basics and a manager who values learning on the job
Focus on practical wins like logging and endpoint protection and incident response you can show progress and you may not need Security+ to land a junior role
Some folks pivot by running a small home lab and writing a story about how they fixed a real problem its worth trying even if you skip the cert for now
