So I’m finally in a position to buy my first proper car, and I’ve been looking at used SUVs. The thing is, every single listing seems to mention a “full service history” like it’s a magic phrase, but I’m not really sure what I’m supposed to be looking for in those records. Does a stamped book actually tell you the whole story, or are there specific things that would make you walk away even if the book looks complete?
I get why the phrase full service history feels like a guarantee, but a stamped book by itself does not tell the full story.
A real check is to read the log for regular service intervals, who did the work, and any major jobs like cambelt or brakes, plus mileage dates.
If it shows a full service history I imagine a neat shelf of receipts and nothing else tells the truth.
You could be fine with the book but a pre purchase inspection can uncover hidden wear that the records miss.
Maybe frame the issue as how the car was cared for day to day rather than a paper trail, are you listening for any telltale noises during a drive?
Keep an eye on the current condition and do a thorough test drive rather than assuming the book means no surprises.
