I’ve been looking at older fiberglass boats from the 70s and 80s lately, and I keep hearing about the risks of hidden moisture and core issues. I’m just wondering how you all go about evaluating that before making an offer—it seems like a real minefield for a first-time buyer like me.
I get why hidden moisture in old fiberglass makes you nervous It can hide in core material and pop up as delamination you wont see from the outside The first moves for me are a careful walk around listening for soft spots and a moisture meter test if possible
Try to treat the hull like a patient and map weak spots with a moisture meter and a bore scope if you can A professional survey is ideal but a DIY check can reveal red flags like soft spots odd stains or delaminated core
People say these older boats are scrap with hidden moisture but a measured approach helps You might plan for repairs but not chase a perfect hull
Maybe the fear is the word core itself not the boat You test for moisture you check fasteners you look at the deck for moisture bleeding through and you decide what repair you are willing to do
Not every shop will chase every problem a quick feel test followed by a soak check then a plan is enough to decide if you want to keep looking or switch models
Writing craft note the way moisture hints and the word core carry mood The real trick is to translate that mood into a practical check list without scaring yourself away
Bring a surveyor you trust and insist on tests in the core places plus a plan for repairs and a clear budget
