So we finally pulled up the old, worn-out carpet in our living room, hoping for some nice original hardwood underneath. Instead, we found a patchwork of different wood types and some pretty rough-looking boards. I’m just wondering if anyone else has faced this kind of surprise and what you ended up doing, because the idea of a full refinishing job feels pretty daunting right now.
That gut punch when you lift carpet and find a patchwork of woods instead of solid hardwood. It changes the whole vibe and it makes sense to pause before you decide on a plan.
If you want to salvage the space you could level the highs with careful planing fill gaps and sand to even color on a hardwood floor and then decide if you want to blend patches or age the surface.
I suspect most people expect a clean reveal of original hardwood boards but this looks like a mix of species and widths that might never match which can actually be interesting if you lean into it.
Are you sure you want to chase a perfect match or would a bold new look be a better start a wide plank or contrasting species could be your own statement with hardwood as a feature?
If you want a quicker tweak you could cover the space with a floating floor or a durable option and still land a hardwood vibe with engineered wood over the old subfloor.
Do a small test patch to check moisture and nail grip before you commit and keep in mind this is your space not a showroom for hardwood decisions.
