Okay, so I’ve been running my small service business for a couple years now, and I keep hitting this weird wall every few months where I feel like I’m scrambling to cover bills even when we’re booked solid. I’m looking at my bank balance and then at my upcoming invoices, and the timing just never seems to line up. I know I should probably get a better handle on my cash flow, but honestly, I’m not even sure where to start or what I should be looking at week to week. Does anyone else just feel like you’re constantly guessing?
That sounds exhausting the cash flow pressure can feel endless even when the schedule looks solid and booked
Set up a cash flow forecast for the next eight weeks and track week by week what must come in and what must go out so you can see the gaps early
Just because you are booked does not mean cash is in the bank right away and that gap will bite you when you least expect it
A lot of folks chase fancy dashboards but the core is timing not complexity so start small with a simple list of invoices due this week and payments you must make for your cash flow
Maybe treat this as a financing cycle rather than a cash flow problem and look at client payment terms and options like deposits or staggered billing to smooth the flow of cash flow
If you have to choose one tweak this week be strict about invoices and payroll alignment consider a small discount for early payment and keep a weekly cash flow snapshot
This could be a chance to build a buffer by revisiting pricing or terms or a small credit line and not as a final answer but as a different take on cash flow
