I’ve been trying to eat more whole foods lately, and I keep seeing people talk about the benefits of a high-fiber diet. Honestly, I’m just not sure if what I’m feeling is normal—I made the switch and my digestion has been all over the place, kind of bloated and unpredictable. Did anyone else hit a rough patch when they first increased their fiber intake a lot?
That sounds familiar. Fiber can do a number on the gut at first. The change is not unusual and the bloat often eases after a few days or weeks if you ease into it.
Two kinds of fiber are soluble and insoluble. They affect gas and water with different timing. If you jumped in fast the gut may react loudly. Try a slower ramp and drink more water and see if things settle.
Maybe fiber is not the only culprit could other changes be at play?
Maybe the goal here is not to chase a high fiber average but to tune what your body wants. High fiber might be useful but listening to signals and adjusting pace could be better.
I had a rough week after switching to high fiber and I felt like a balloon. It passed after a bit.
Thinking about fiber also brings up the gut microbiome and how short chain fatty acids change with new foods even if you do not spell it all out.
