Full Version: Why do bus schedules feel inconsistent and keep making me late?

I’ve been trying to use the bus more to get downtown, but I keep finding myself waiting way longer than the posted schedule says. It’s gotten to the point where I’m just leaving way earlier and still feeling stressed about being late. Has anyone else noticed this kind of inconsistency with their local service lately? I’m starting to wonder if the posted times are even a useful reference anymore.
Yeah, I get that. The schedule used to feel like a promise, and lately it just feels like a best-guess. I keep checking the board and the clock and still end up feeling late.
From a transit operations view, delays spread because headways drift and signals stack up. The published schedule assumes a normal day, which isn't what you get most mornings.
I used to assume the schedule meant every bus arrives on time; on some days I catch a different route and it feels the same line but it's not.
Another take: the schedule is optimistic, and delays are treated as exceptions. If you want certainty, you won't get it by staring at the posted times.
Maybe the issue isn't punctual buses but how we measure value here. If the goal is downtown by a certain hour, maybe the ride is less about the minute and more about the rhythm of the schedule.
I tried leaving earlier and still feel rushed. Perhaps public transit is more about choosing a slower pace and adjusting expectations than beating clocks; the schedule becomes part of the scenery.
Have you tried a backup plan like a rideshare window or a different route that aligns with the schedule more forgiving? The idea is to keep options open.
