I’ve been thinking about entering a few creative contests lately, but I keep hesitating because I’m not sure what judges are really looking for. My friend says it’s all about having a unique voice, but then I see winners that follow a certain trend. Has anyone else felt stuck trying to figure out the balance between being authentic and what might actually catch the judge’s eye?
That tug between staying true to your voice and chasing a win feels personal to me too, like balancing a heartbeat with a drumbeat.
Judges vary but common threads show up in clear stakes and a line that lands fast. A distinctive voice helps but it is not enough if the piece wanders or fails to hold attention. In some contests trends arise from shared reader habits and timing more than intent.
I hear there is a secret map where your inner voice points to a dramatic twist and everyone nods, but maybe the map is just a mirage and the room wants a cozy familiar moment.
Chasing a trend might feel safer cuz it fits what readers expect in a busy feed, yet that may not be a judge mood so much as a crowd mood paid for by clicks.
Instead of asking what wins ask what keeps a reader turning pages. The voice that invites trust is the same voice that makes the turn feel earned.
Maybe start small and test the feel on a buddy read.
