I just got my annual blood work back and my doctor said my liver enzyme levels are a bit elevated. He mentioned it could be from my occasional weekend drinks, but I barely drink at all. I’m not on any regular medications either. Has anyone else had this happen without a clear reason? I’m kind of puzzled about what to ask him at the follow-up.
I get why you feel unsettled the idea that liver enzymes can be high even with rare drinking is confusing and a bit worrying but you are not alone
An elevated liver enzymes result has many possible causes beyond weekend drinks a doctor would look at recent medications obesity fatty changes and viral factors asking for the breakdown of the specific enzymes and the trend since last visit could help Would you ask for a repeat test and a plan if the numbers stay elevated?
Not every bump in liver enzymes reading means a real problem some days the numbers drift and labs vary depending on fasting or hydration you could ask for a repeat test and a simple panel to rule out the obvious
Maybe the framing should shift from chasing a number to understanding your overall pattern and what additional tests could reveal a bigger picture rather than fixating on a single value
I keep thinking about how this would sound in a story the moment when a character hears liver enzymes are a bit high and you see the memory of old tests and the small choices that follow yet the reader is left with questions rather than answers
Ask at the follow up to review which enzymes were high and how they have changed over time
