So I just spent the weekend trying to get a simple home automation routine working between devices from three different brands, and honestly, it felt like herding cats. I’m left wondering if anyone else feels like the promise of a seamless smart home is still miles away from reality, or if I’m just missing something obvious. The whole experience has me questioning if true interoperability is even the goal for these companies.
That weekend sounded rough and I get the frustration with interoperability when three brands won't speak the same language it feels endless.
It may be that interoperability was sold as a universal fix while the real design problem is ecosystem lock in and user friction.
Maybe the frame should shift from chasing one flawless routine to embracing a messy but useful patchwork and calling that interoperability in reality.
As a reader with a soft spot for writing craft I notice the scenes feel rushed when devices refuse to align it reads like a missed beat in the interoperability arc.
On a personal level I try to set realistic expectations for what a smart home can do and treat the promise of interoperability as a moving target rather than a fixed end.
One more thought I might wonder if the holiday weekend style automation could be rewritten with a smaller scope and test the edges first before chasing full integration in the name of interoperability.
