I was rewatching some old favorites this weekend and it got me thinking about how my taste has changed. I used to love really complex, plot-heavy stuff, but lately I find myself just wanting a film with a truly unforgettable protagonist. I wonder if anyone else has had their preferences shift like that over the years, and what it says about what you need from a story at different times.
I get that, a truly unforgettable protagonist can outshine a maze of plot twists and carry you through even when the pacing slips.
In my case I notice mood and life rhythm tilt my tastes toward character gravity rather than sprawling schemes the protagonist becomes the lens I am living through.
Maybe you overestimate how much complexity you need and a single moment can carry the weight.
Could be that what you chase is a moment of honesty on screen rather than a mapped journey the idea deserves a gentle nudge.
I sometimes flip the question and ask what kind of world the film makes you inhabit the protagonist again becomes a doorway rather than a star.
What if the frame you are using to judge films is too narrow and a film with quiet rhythms and strong mood can still feel transformative without a heroic centerpiece?
I would be cautious about calling this a real taste shift it might be nostalgia talking after a run of favorites more about mood than movie craft.
