I’m trying to decide whether to upgrade my old laptop or just buy a new one, and I keep hitting the same wall. My current machine is fine for basic stuff, but it really chokes when I try to edit photos, which is becoming more of a hobby for me. I’ve been reading about the performance uplift with a solid-state drive, and I’m wondering if that single upgrade would be enough to buy me another year or two, or if I’m just putting a band-aid on an outdated system.
An upgrade to an SSD and a bit more RAM could make your current laptop feel faster for photo work. It would cut boot times, file saves, and app launches and might buy you another year or two if your edits stay moderate.
From a hardware perspective an SSD is a big speed lever but it does not fix a weak CPU or limited RAM. That means you would notice faster loads but complex edits may still lag.
That sounds like a band aid move. If you plan to grow your editing you might be better off saving for a newer rig.
Why frame this as upgrade versus new Then consider a used newer laptop that fits your budget and handles edits better without the full price of new.
As someone who spends time with photos the display quality and color accuracy matter as much as speed A smart upgrade that improves screen and storage can change how you feel about the process.
I doubt a single upgrade will satisfy big projects If you start doing batch edits or large RAW files you may hit limits again and a new machine might be smarter for the long run.
Would you be open to a light used machine now and a bigger upgrade later?
