I’ve been noticing more and more people in my neighborhood putting up those “you are being recorded” signs, and honestly it’s starting to make me feel a bit uneasy just walking my dog. I’m not sure where the line is between reasonable security and a creeping surveillance culture in our own communities.
I feel unsettled when the street feels watched and the idea that someone is recorded hangs in the air. It changes how I walk my dog and what I notice at dusk.
From a safety angle the signs a neighbor puts up can raise awareness and help people notice unusual activity, and the idea of being recorded may slow someone down.
Maybe some neighbors mean the signs as a friendly heads up for walkers and dogs, but I worry the same signage could turn the block into a list of who is recorded.
To me the risk feels smaller than the way the signs frame the street and I wonder if the fear of being recorded is louder than the real danger.
Instead of chasing a shield we could talk about shared routines and trust which may make the idea of being recorded fade a bit.
If the signs bother you try walking with a neighbor at the same time, keep lights on, and share tips so your sense of recorded safety is less tense.
