So I finally got a proper gaming chair, the kind with all the adjustable lumbar and everything, but after a few hours my lower back is actually worse than with my old dining room chair. I thought this was supposed to be the upgrade. Has anyone else had this happen? I’m wondering if I just need to break it in or if I’ve got all the settings completely wrong.
Yeah, I had that happen after I swapped to a chair with all the lumbar tweaks. It felt great in the store, then after a few hours I woke up with a tighter lower back. Ergonomics can be sneaky like that—the fit isn’t just about features, it’s about how they align with your body. Do you notice you tilt forward when you play?
Try dialing the lumbar so it supports the natural curve without pushing your spine forward. Also check seat depth and knee angle; if your legs feel tangled you end up using your back as a lever instead of your core.
Maybe the issue isn’t the chair but your desk setup. A racy monitor height or a desk that’s too high can force you into awkward postures, even with a fancy backrest.
I’d push back on assuming more settings equals comfort. Sometimes the right move is a simpler setup or even a different chair geometry that reminds you to sit evenly instead of sinking into the back.
If you want to keep playing, intersperse microbreaks and short walks. The chair can help, but long sessions demand movement, otherwise pain just migrates.
From my experience, it helped to pair the chair with a light core routine and a small cushion for the tailbone. Ergonomics isn’t magic, it’s a system.
