Full Version: How should I wire a new VHF radio with old wiring: reuse or add a new line?

So I’m finally getting around to installing a new VHF on my old weekender, and I’m staring at this rat’s nest of old wiring behind the console. The previous owner had a chartplotter, an old GPS, and who knows what else tapped in there. I’m just not sure if I should trace and reuse the existing power cable for the new radio, or if I should run a fresh, dedicated line all the way back to the battery switch. What’s the usual move here when you’re dealing with decades of add-ons?
That wiring nest behind the console feels like a trap door for the boat gods and the idea of a VHF spark makes me tense.
Usually you want a clean dedicated feed from the battery switch with a proper fuse and a grounded block so you dont chase gremlins later.
Maybe the old power line is shielded enough and you can reuse it for the VHF without trouble depending on load.
Why assume you need one long run from the battery when a small distribution block near the radio could split the load.
Decades of add ons often hide a brittle ground or a bad fuse and the VHF might demand steadier current than you expect.
Think of it as reliability first not just wiring routes. A tidy install can help you hear the weather and your own calls clearly.
From a writing craft angle this scene of wires beats on the nerves while the VHF waits for a clean feed.
