Okay, so I was trying to make some copper sulfate crystals at home, and I’m a bit stuck. I dissolved the copper oxide in sulfuric acid and got a nice blue solution, but now it’s been sitting for days and nothing seems to be happening. I was expecting to see some seed crystals form by now for crystal growth. Did I maybe not let enough water evaporate, or is my solution just not saturated enough? I’m not sure what step I messed up.
Copper sulfate crystals can be a patience game. That nice blue copper sulfate solution sitting there for days might just be at equilibrium, waiting for a seed or a tiny fluctuation to tip it over into crystal growth. Don’t be surprised if you don’t see a dramatic seeding event right away.
From a chemistry angle, saturation for copper sulfate depends on temperature and time. Copper sulfate dissolves more readily when hot and less when the water evaporates or cools, so you can end up in a supersaturated state that needs a nucleus to start growing. Impurities or tiny disturbances can derail that nucleus.
Maybe the seed crystal mindset is overemphasized for copper sulfate. Sometimes the system sits in a stable state and never launches a clear crystal if the energy barrier stays high. You might not get the expected sparkle, and that doesn’t mean the chemistry is broken. Is the seed idea the wrong lens here?
Another way to frame copper sulfate growth is nucleation energy. Without a triggering event you won’t get a crystal lattice from a perfectly good copper sulfate solution, and spontaneous nucleation is fickle. It’s not guaranteed and depends on tiny fluctuations.
It could also be that you’re not pulling the copper sulfate solution toward a new equilibrium. A slow drift in temperature or evaporation rate can matter, so the whole setup slowly reconfigures into larger or more visible crystals—or nothing at all.
Safety note: handling sulfuric acid and copper sulfate is hazardous. Keep PPE handy, work in a well ventilated area, and dispose of wastes properly. If you try again, keep the environment clean and watch for any fumes or spills.
