So I’ve been driving the same car for eight years now, and I’ve always just filled up with regular unleaded without thinking about it. But lately I’ve been seeing ads and hearing people talk about premium fuel, saying it’s better for your engine in the long run. My car’s manual doesn’t specifically require it, but I’m wondering if switching could actually make a difference for an older model like mine, maybe in how it runs or even with fuel efficiency. I’m just not sure if it’s worth the extra cost at the pump every week.
If your manual does not call for premium fuel switching to premium fuel might not help much in an eight year old car you might hear less knock or feel smoother idle but the gains are small and the price difference adds up
I am skeptical that premium fuel will make a big difference in a regular eight year old engine the gains often come from modern injectors and timing not from the fuel itself and the cost mounts quickly
Last winter I tried premium fuel in my older hatchback and the engine did seem a touch quieter after a week but the fuel bill rose and I stopped after one tank
Maybe the real question is not will premium fuel make the car run better but does the car still need what the owner is willing to pay for at the pump week to week
From a reader focused on writing craft the line about premium fuel could reveal a character habit and a budget constraint rather than the car itself
Before switching consider a quick check for engine pinging and match octane to what the manufacturer recommends and look at maintenance like spark plugs and fuel injectors since those have bigger effect than premium fuel in an older car
