I’ve been trying to make my video editing feel less generic, so I started cutting clips to the rhythm of the background music instead of just using straight cuts. It feels more dynamic to me, but I’m honestly not sure if it actually makes the final product better or if it’s just getting distracting. Does anyone else wrestle with this kind of thing when you’re deep in the edit?
I get the thrill of cutting to the music and it can feel energizing yet it also crowds the scene if you overdo it.
When the rhythm matches a character beat it can lift the moment but I would watch how viewers actually respond and if it becomes distracting.
You might be chasing a vibe more than a result and that can drift you away from clear storytelling.
What if rhythm is just a scaffold not the whole frame use it to guide tempo but let the mood and dialogue breathe when needed?
I respect the craft angle and I keep an eye on whether rhythm changes help readability or just decorate the ride.
I like mixing a few off beat cuts to keep it from feeling too mechanistic and to remind viewers there is space for silence.
Have you tried showing this cut approach to a friend for feedback and seeing what they actually notice about rhythm?
