Hey folks, hoping someone has run into this before. I was driving my old truck home last night and the headlights just started randomly dimming and brightening on their own, like they were breathing. It’s not the alternator, as I just had that tested and it’s fine. Really throws you off when it’s pitch black out.
Headlights dimming in the dark would freak me out too. It sounds unnerving but not impossible to troubleshoot. Maybe a loose ground or some fluctuating voltage sneaking in.
Breathing headlights usually point to voltage instability. If the alternator test is clean, check the battery terminals for corrosion, the battery under load, and the main ground strap to the chassis. Also inspect the headlight wiring and any aftermarket wiring. A failing regulator can cause the phenomenon even if the alternator passed a bench test.
Could it be a sticky headlight switch or a failing dimmer control? Or maybe you’re just noticing aging bulbs with uneven brightness. Not every wobble means a scary electrical fault.
What if the issue isn’t the headlights at all but the control logic feeding them. A body control module or dash dimmer could be interacting with the lighting circuit in odd ways, especially on an old truck.
Ground strap first. It’s often the culprit when headlights blink like that.
If you can test the voltage with a multimeter as the lights flicker, watch the reading. A drop from a normal level around 13.8 to 14.4 volts to something lower would point to a battery or wiring issue rather than a bad bulb.
Some trucks use a BCM that can misbehave and cause headlights to pulse. It won’t always show a clear fault code but it is a concept worth mentioning as you hunt for the cause.
