Full Version: What should I choose for a workbench vise: quick-release or screw?

So I’ve finally started building that small workbench for the garage, and I’m already stuck on the vise. I picked up a quick release vise thinking it would be the obvious choice, but now I’m wondering if I should have gone with a traditional screw one instead for more control on heavier work. Has anyone else gone back and forth on this?
I went with a screw vise on a small bench and I like the bite when I push hard. Quick release is handy for quick tasks but it can wobble under heavy loads.
I am not sure the quick release is always the answer for heavy work the screw style grips more solidly and stays put.
I started with a quick release and then swapped to a screw vise after a rough cut slipped in the jaw and the board moved.
For rough lumber the quick release saves time but if you are doing planing or rasp work a screw one feels more controlled.
I wish there was a simple compromise like a hybrid vise that offers both quick action and strong bite.
Maybe a cheap sturdy screw vise now and a quick release for light duties later could be the route you fall into.
