Okay, I need to get this off my chest. I’ve always been a pretty relaxed parent, but lately my seven-year-old has started lying about really small, pointless things, like whether he brushed his teeth or where he put his snack wrapper. It’s not the big stuff, but the sheer frequency of these little fibs is starting to get under my skin. I’m trying to figure out if this is just a normal phase of testing boundaries or if I should be more concerned about how to respond. I don’t want to make a huge deal out of it and create a bigger issue, but ignoring it doesn’t feel right either. Has anyone else been through a patch like this with their kid?
I hear you. The small lying can feel like a grind, but at seven it can be a normal honesty test. Maybe try a calm, non accusatory talk, ask why he chose to lie and what truth he hopes will happen, and model telling the truth yourself.
Honestly I would not overreact to every little lie, but I would check in once or twice about what is really going on. Sometimes kids lie to avoid a consequence they think is harsh. Do you think he is testing limits?
One lazy afternoon my kid told a tiny lying about where a snack wrapper went and I just sighed, then we cleaned up together and moved on. It persisted for a bit, then faded when I kept it low drama and offered a simple truth reward.
At seven I started noticing the lying where he would exaggerate small stuff. We did a calm talk about honesty and kept consequences light, plus a mom or dad model of honesty when we slip.
I wonder if this is more about attention or boredom than real deceit. If the lying keeps up maybe a quick chat with a teacher could help, or just a shared game where honesty wins.
Keep routines around brushing and snacks, and maybe a tiny reminder board for truth telling. When he tells the truth, point it out kindly. It might not fix it overnight.
