I think I’ve finally settled on wanting a used hatchback, something like a five-year-old Volkswagen Golf, for my commute and weekend trips. I’ve been scrolling through listings for weeks, and I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by what I should actually be looking for beyond the mileage and a clean exterior. A friend mentioned using a detailed car buying checklist before you even go to see a vehicle, which sounds smart, but I’m unsure what should be on it for a car of this age. I’m also wondering how much weight to give to a full service history from a main dealer versus a trusted independent garage, as I’m seeing both. The whole process makes me nervous about missing something obvious that will cost me later.
Nice plan. A car buying checklist can help you stay organized before you even step on a lot.
Besides mileage and looks you want a clear service history check the maintenance notes for the engine the timing belt if applicable the brakes tires suspension and whether any fault codes show up in a quick scan.
That makes sense and when you weigh dealer service history against an independent garage record which one feels more trustworthy to you?
Yeah it depends on the car and the service receipts but would you expect the timing belt or water pump to be the big cost if it needs work?
I tried a similar approach last year and the best thing I did was bring a friend to the test drive and really notice how the car handles on rough roads.
The worry that a spotless history hides issues is real so I would pair the history with a pre purchase inspection by a local mechanic.
So what small step would you take first to feel less overwhelmed when you go to view a car this weekend?
