I'm finally upgrading the electronics on my old center console and looking at getting a marine chartplotter. The features list is overwhelming—sonar, radar, satellite imagery overlays. For coastal fishing and cruising, do I really need all the bells and whistles, or is a solid GPS with detailed charts the most important thing?
Solid plan focus on a dependable GPS with clear charts and good update coverage for coastal work the rest is optional until you know you actually need it
Bells and whistles can complicate things raft less critical features first then upgrade if a feature proves useful for your trips especially if you cruise with crew
Screen readability matters a lot a big bright display with crisp charts makes day and night sailing easier you may not need top tier gear to get reliable navigation
Think modular a setup that lets you add a fish finder or radar later without swapping the whole system keeps options open
Check chart coverage for the areas you fish and cruise and look at how often the charts update real timing updates matter in busy coastal waters
If you want I can compare two popular options based on your boat size budget and typical routes and flag what to prioritize in the buying decision
