I want to get into a long-running shonen series that has a main story, prequels, and spin-offs. I found a suggested manga reading order online, but it seems really complicated, jumping between different titles. Is it better to just read the main series first and then go back to the supplementary material, or does mixing them actually enhance the experience?
That is a legit way to approach it. Mixing can deepen the experience but it can also muddy the pacing if you jump around. Usually it is smart to read the core main series first to get the through line and then layer in prequels and spin offs to see the backstory or alternate perspectives. The reading order you choose does not have to be sacred. Focus on what makes the story feel coherent to you. Does that fit how you like to uncover details
Personally I start with the main series up to a natural finish point then branch out. Prequels can be great after you know the core because foreshadowing and reveals land better. Spin offs are optional depending on which characters you actually care about
Be careful some spin offs are non canon or set in a different timeline. Mixing can spoil surprises or create confusion if you chase every side title
Plan make a simple map. List the main arcs note which side titles connect finish arc then read those related works. It keeps the pace manageable and avoids random jumps
If you want tell me the title and what you enjoy most I can sketch a simple reading order path or a small list of starter reads
Ultimately there is no universal best some readers love a mixed approach others want a clean main story first path. Start with a flexible plan and adjust as you go
