I'm trying to get into modding Skyrim for the first time, and everyone says to use a mod manager. I installed Vortex mod manager because it seemed user-friendly, but I'm already confused about load order and deployment. Is it supposed to handle all of that automatically, or am I missing a crucial setup step?
Vortex uses LOOT to sort load order automatically and deployment to hook mods into the game. It isn’t magic though; you still need to confirm patches and sometimes move a mod higher or lower in the list. Want a quick 4 step starter plan?
Begin with a clean baseline: choose 5–8 must have mods, install them, and run LOOT via Vortex to get a sane order. Then test with a clean save and see if the game loads and behaves. Need a simple checklist to run tonight?
Pay attention to required masters and patches. A lot of instability comes from a DLC or patch introduced later than a mod expects. Do you already know which mods you intend to use and their prerequisites?
Split your load into groups: core engine mods, gameplay tweaks, graphics, UI patches. You can disable whole groups when testing. Want a sample grouping template?
Treat deployment as the last step and test after each batch of mods. If you push to the game and it crashes, backtrack to the last working load order. Would you like a small one-page plan to follow?
Backups and profiles are your friends; use a separate profile for experimentation and keep a clean backup of a working setup. If you want, paste your current mod list and I'll help you sketch a practical plan.
