I'm trying to get a clearer picture of the competitive landscape for a new product I'm planning. I found a competitor analysis template online, but it seems to focus mostly on features and pricing. What other, less obvious factors should I be tracking to understand why customers might choose them over us?
Interesting challenge. Beyond features and price think about how quickly a customer sees value after they start using it. Onboarding time time to value and the support experience drive customer value and retention not just the feature list. Also map out integrations and data portability so people do not feel locked in.
Trust and viability are crucial. Check the vendor health and roadmap and who else uses the product. People buy from stable teams more than flashy claims and the community around the product matters for long term support. Consider references and support responsiveness.
Operational factors matter. Look at how easy it is to deploy and maintain the tool what the uptime looks like and how security is handled. Compliance with your industry rules matters for many buyers.
Market signals should not be ignored. Reviews case studies and references help but also watch for how the vendor handles privacy and data migration. The ecosystem around the tool including partners and training can sway decisions in real life and support future use.
Cost of ownership counts. Training time switching costs and the need for consultants add up even if the base features look superior. A cheaper option may cost you more in the long run if you cannot move data or ramp up quickly.
Run a small pilot with real users if possible. Define clear success criteria measure actual outcomes and compare with a control. A few weeks of real usage can reveal how it compares to the current setup and will show practical value.
Want a simple scoring rubric to apply to a set of vendors I can draft a quick sheet you can copy into your notes and adapt for your space Would that be useful
