I'm slowly replacing my old smart home gadgets and trying to avoid getting locked into one ecosystem again. I've been looking for Matter compatible smart bulbs, but the actual selection in stores seems pretty limited right now. Is the standard mature enough to invest in, or are we still in the early adopter phase where things might change?
Matter is getting usable for bulbs. Most major brands now ship Matter ready bulbs and you can control them from multiple ecosystems for basic on off and scenes. The catch is features vary by firmware and brand so you may see small quirks across vendors.
I wouldn’t call it fully mature yet; retail availability still varies and firmware updates can break automations. If you’re chasing perfect cross vendor parity you might still hit edge cases.
Do a tiny test run by using one hub you trust and a couple Matter bulbs to verify the core flows before you commit to a big install.
Thread support is common now but you may need a Thread border router if you use HomeKit or a Thread enabled hub.
If you can wait a bit you might see more devices and better interop; otherwise you can start with a couple bulbs and be ready to swap later.
What’s your current setup and which ecosystems are you already in?
