I'm helping to moderate a small but growing hobby forum, and we're seeing a lot of new members just post once and disappear. Our current forum onboarding flow is basically just a welcome email with the rules. I'm wondering if we're missing a chance to make them feel part of something right away. What small, low-effort things have you seen actually help new people stick around and post more?
Nice topic. Start with a lightweight onboarding path that still sets expectations. Pin a Getting Started thread that suggests 3 starter prompts, plus assign a friendly 'welcome buddy' to reply within 24 hours. A quick hello plus one share goes a long way toward making people feel part of the forum from day one.
Onboarding isn’t magic, but it can set the stage. Focus on what actually gets people posting: a few easy prompts, a visible path to contribute, and responses from existing members that welcome newcomers. Keep the flow human and avoid turning it into a lecture.
Keep it simple: a welcome post, two simple prompts to spark discussion, and a weekly recap that links new member posts. The goal is to reduce friction in onboarding so people see early value and keep posting.
Try a 5 item Starter Pack for onboarding: 1) introduce yourself, 2) ask a hobby question, 3) comment on someone else, 4) share a resource, 5) join a weekly thread. Use a clear tag like new member so veterans know who to reach out to. That structure gives newbies a clear path without heavy setup.
Track a couple of metrics as part of onboarding success—first post within 48 hours, at least one reply within 24 hours. If those lag, adjust prompts or topics. Keep it evidence-based rather than guessing what ‘should’ work.
Encourage the existing community to look out for newcomers: welcome messages, subtle prompts to contribute, and a weekly 'new member spotlight'. A little recognition goes a long way toward real onboarding.
Keep options open and iterate. Don’t gate content; provide a few easy onboarding routes and let people pick what fits. You can run a one-week test of a new starter prompt set and see if engagement climbs before expanding it.
