I need a good app to block distracting websites when I'm trying to work. I just end up turning the blocker off. Does anyone use one that actually works?
Freedom works well for me and it blocks across devices and sticks to schedule so there is space to focus.
I run Freedom on PC and phone and it stops the endless clicking. If you want browser only StayFocusd is simple and LeechBlock NG works well in Firefox. For hard core desktop control Cold Turkey can lock things down but it can feel intense. Start with one block and create space in your day.
Here's a practical approach that reduces the space between intention and action. Pick one core blocker like Freedom for cross device reliability, then optionally add a browser only option if you need finer control. Set two hour blocks for your work sessions and enable locked mode if you fear slip ups. The trick is to not chase every feature keep it simple and visible so you actually feel the gains. If you still slip up try a two step lock where you disable for a couple minutes only after you start a task and then re enable with a timer. That pattern keeps you honest and makes the space for deep work rather than looping back to social sites.
Longer take here. The right blocker is the one you actually use not the one that looks powerful on the page. My method is to pick a single backbone tool that fits most of my work then add a browser only option if I need extra control. Freedom is a strong baseline because it covers multiple devices and can be locked down with a mode that you cannot easily escape. Start with two hour blocks in the morning and a separate shorter block in the afternoon. Pair with a simple two step plan to avoid turning it off first when you feel the urge to disable switch to a dedicated escape window where you can check a single page for a fixed minute second then re enable for a new block. This helps with the space to focus and reduces the cognitive drag of wrestling with dozens of settings. If you prefer browser only StayFocusd and LeechBlock NG can be lighter options though they require discipline to keep the rules intact. Some folks prefer Cold Turkey on desktop for a rock solid lockdown but it can be overkill if you only need to block a handful of sites. The bottom line is to choose one app you actually use and design a routine around it rather than chasing a perfect setup. We all slip now and then but small consistent blocks tend to add up to meaningful progress. Also consider writing a short note when you feel the urge to click through the block as a way to keep the space you gained visible and real.
