I'm trying to find a good app to learn a new language, but most of them feel more like games than actual teaching. What has worked for you for serious learning?
Yep games can be fun but they rarely deliver deep grammar and speaking practice.
For serious learning I mix Anki for spaced repetition with Clozemaster or LingQ for real sentences plus Pimsleur or Italki for listening and speaking. Don’t chase points log daily not endless levels.
Choose one backbone app you actually tolerate then add a couple of supporting tools. A common combo is Anki for vocabulary LingQ or Clozemaster for context and a way to practice speaking Italki or a language exchange group. Set a simple weekly plan 15 20 minutes on flashcards 30 minutes listening and one 20 30 minute speaking session. Use active recall and shadowing and track progress with a quick weekly review. The danger with many serious options is overwhelm and a blank space between lessons. If you want a doable route start small commit to a specific routine and gradually add tasks only when you actually keep up.
