I've been collecting retro game consoles for a while, but I'm starting to worry about the long-term viability of the original hardware. Capacitors are failing, lasers are dying, and replacement parts are getting scarce. At what point does it make more sense to move to FPGA-based consoles or software emulation for preservation, rather than trying to keep 30-year-old electronics running?
