I’m trying to build a small, self-contained hydroponic unit for growing leafy greens inside my apartment’s walk-in closet, which has no natural light and very tight spatial constraints—the entire usable footprint is only 2.5 by 4 feet. My budget is capped at $200, and I need the system to be almost silent because the closet shares a wall with my bedroom. I’ve sourced a low-flow submersible pump and some PVC pipes, but I’m stuck on the lighting; the typical LED grow panels are too wide and generate noticeable fan noise. I’m considering repurposing high-output, low-heat LED strip lights mounted on the underside of the closet shelf above, but I have no idea if the specific light spectrum or the low ceiling height—just 18 inches from the shelf to the planned grow tray—will cause heat stress or insufficient coverage for a harvest of microgreens and spinach within a 4-week cycle.
