I’m trying to design a small, permanent outdoor stage for our community garden’s events, but I’m completely stuck on the roofing. The space is only 12x8 feet, and our budget is a hard $1,200, which has to cover everything from the pressure-treated lumber frame to the final shingles. The main issue is that we need the roof to provide decent shelter from rain for a performer and a small amp, but the whole structure can’t cast significant shade on the adjacent vegetable plots for more than an hour in the late afternoon due to the garden’s sunlight covenant. I’ve considered a slanted clear polycarbonate panel roof to minimize shadow, but I’m worried about drumming noise during rain and adequate runoff, as we can’t connect to any drainage system. I have to present a finalized plan to the garden committee by the end of next week.
