I’ve been tasked with creating a small, immersive soundscape installation for a historical walking tour in our coastal town, focusing on the 1920s fishing industry. My budget is only about $800, and I need to set up three discreet, weatherproof audio points along a half-mile stretch of the actual, still-active harbor docks. The challenge is that I can’t run any permanent wiring or use Wi-Fi due to the location, and the sounds—like net mending, boat engines, and period-specific market chatter—need to be triggered reliably by passive infrared sensors when tour groups pause at specific markers, but the sensors keep getting false triggers from seagulls and swaying ropes. I have to finalize and install this within the next three weeks before the tourist season starts, and I’m stuck on a low-tech, battery-powered solution that can handle the salt air and won’t be disrupted by the environment.
Plan three rugged, battery-powered nodes along the dock: each houses a weatherproof 5W speaker, a DFPlayer MP3 (or ESP32 SD) with a small PIR, and a LiFePO4 pack. PIR triggers short loops; use a 15–20 s cooldown and a two-trigger window to suppress gulls. Seal enclosures, use grommets, mount discreetly at markers. Budget under 800; test week prior.
