I’ve been tasked with creating a small, immersive audio installation for a historical maritime museum’s new exhibit on 19th-century whaling, but I’m hitting a wall with the spatial sound design. My budget is tight, around $800, and I’m working in a cramped, irregularly shaped alcove off the main gallery, about 10x15 feet with low, curved ceilings. I have four small, directional speakers, a basic mixer, and my laptop running Reaper, but I’m struggling to create a believable 3D audio environment that suggests the vastness of the ocean and the proximity of a ship’s creaking timbers without it just sounding like separate, disjointed layers. The museum’s strict no-subwoofer policy (due to vibration concerns) is also killing my low-end for the whale sounds, and I need to finalize this in the next nine days before the exhibit opens.
