I'm trying to build a small, portable darkroom for developing black and white film that I can set up and break down in my tiny, windowless bathroom without permanently altering the rental space. My budget is under $200, and I've sourced a used enlarger and three plastic developing tanks, but I'm struggling with the lightproofing and ventilation. I need to create a temporary seal around the door and install a safe, red safelight that won't fog the film, all while ensuring adequate airflow to handle chemical fumes without installing an exhaust fan that would violate my lease. The space is only about 5 by 7 feet, and I have to store everything in a closet when not in use, so any solution needs to be compact and quick to deploy for a few hours at a time.
Plan a portable, non-permanent setup: seal the door with magnetic weatherstripping and a blackout curtain, plus a removable light trap around the enlarger. Use a small red safelight (15–25W) with a simple hood and test for fogging first. For fumes, run a quiet inline fan through a DIY activated-charcoal box and vent via a temporary window kit; store everything in a rolling tote.
