I've been struggling with persistent anxiety and low mood for several months, and while I have a supportive partner, I feel like I need to seek professional mental health support. I'm overwhelmed by the process of finding a therapist—navigating insurance, deciding between different modalities like CBT or psychodynamic therapy, and just finding someone who is taking new patients. I'd appreciate hearing from others about their experiences starting therapy, especially how you found a good fit with a practitioner and what the initial steps were like, as the whole process feels quite daunting right now.
Starting therapy can feel daunting, but you’re not alone. A practical path I’ve seen work: first, write down what you want to address (anxiety symptoms, mood, coping skills). Then search directories (Psychology Today, APA therapist finder) or ask your PCP for referrals, filtering by whether they’re in-network and online options. Next, ask about modality and structure (CBT vs psychodynamic vs mindfulness-based; weekly vs biweekly; homework expectations). Schedule a brief intake call to gauge fit, and bring 3 questions: treatment plan, expected timeline, and whether they coordinate with any meds. After 1–2 sessions, decide if you want to continue or try another clinician. It takes a few tries, but a good fit makes a huge difference.
