I'm a new teaching assistant for an undergraduate organic chemistry lab this semester, and I'm reviewing our safety protocols before the first session. While the standard MSDS sheets and fume hood rules are in place, I'm concerned about effectively communicating the real-world risks of common reagents like thionyl chloride or diethyl ether to students who might be complacent. I want to move beyond just listing rules and create a more engaging and memorable safety briefing. Does anyone have successful strategies or specific, sobering examples that actually make students respect the hazards without causing undue panic?
