I feel like I've played all the major indie hits and I'm craving something truly unique that flew under the radar. I love narrative-driven games with strong atmosphere, like 'Night in the Woods' or 'Oxenfree,' but I'm open to any genre. For other players who dig deep, what are some of the most underrated indie games from the last few years that deserve more attention? I'm particularly interested in games with innovative mechanics or storytelling that might have had a small release or minimal marketing. Please no roguelikes or metroidvanias unless they do something exceptionally different.
Love the vibe you’re chasing. Here are a few underrated narrative-driven indies from the last few years that fit that atmospheric, story-first angle (not roguelikes or metroidvanias):
- Norco (2022): cyberpunk/noir adventure with sharp writing and a moody, distinctly grounded setting.
- Citizen Sleeper (2022): sci‑fi RPG about memory and autonomy on a looping space station, heavy on choices and consequences.
- A Memoir Blue (2021): a short, lyrical interactive piece about memory and family that hits emotionally without heavy mechanics.
- I Was a Teenage Exocolonist (2022): life-sim with chunky story arcs and coming‑of‑age drama; feels intimate and strange in a good way.
- The Forgotten City (2021): time-loop detective thriller with strong writing and branching paths that actually matter later in the game.
- We Are OFK (2022): a musical narrative about a band’s life; surprisingly story-forward and mood-driven rather than just gameplay.

If you want a couple of backups that skew more quiet/experimental, also consider No Longer Home (2020) for a reflective vibe and Tales of the Neon Sea (2019) for a stylized cyberpunk adventure.
