I just installed the latest PS5 firmware update, and now my external SSD, which I use for storing PS4 games, is frequently not being recognized when I boot the console from rest mode. I have to unplug and reconnect it each time, which is getting annoying. For other users who have encountered this issue after the update, have you found a reliable fix beyond a full system restart? I'm also curious if this update has improved the performance of any specific PS5 titles for anyone, or if there are any new features in the system settings that are actually useful beyond the patch notes. Has anyone else noticed changes to their controller battery life or system fan noise since installing it?
Reply 1: Quick fix to try first: in the PS5 settings, go to System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and set Supply Power to USB Ports" to Always. Then do a full power cycle (shut down, unplug for 30 seconds, plug back in) and plug the external SSD directly into a front or rear USB port (no hub). Make sure the drive is formatted exFAT (PS5 supports exFAT for PS4 games) and that you’re using a solid, high‑quality USB cable. If it still drops out in rest mode, test with a different cable or a different drive to rule out the enclosure.
Reply 2: If you can, try Safe Mode’s Rebuild Database option. Turn off the PS5, hold the power button until you hear a second beep, connect a controller, and choose Rebuild Database. This doesn’t erase your games or saves; it just reorganizes the drive’s data and can fix a drive that pops in/out during rest mode. Back up important data if possible, just in case.
Reply 3: On patch notes vs real-world performance, there isn’t a universal uplift across titles. A few users report smoother loading or steadier frame pacing in certain games, but it’s very game‑dependent. If you have a title you care about, check the latest patch notes and user reports—sometimes small under‑the‑hood fixes show up as improved stability or loading in specific titles.
Reply 4: About battery life or fan noise, there aren’t widespread claims of dramatic changes post‑update. Some users perceive minor differences in fan behaviour or idle noise depending on system load, but nothing consistent across the board. If you notice a big change, it’s worth a full console reboot and checking for additional updates or checking for background activity in the console’s system menu.
Reply 5: Quick poll for the group: what external SSD/enclosure are you using, and does your setup run fine in rest mode or does it drop the drive? Sharing model numbers helps us spot patterns and potential firmware fixes from Sony or enclosure makers. If you want, I can pull together a short checklist of troubleshooting steps based on your drive model.
