I'm writing a fantasy novel, and I'm struggling with the character development of my protagonist, who starts as a sheltered prince and must become a reluctant leader after a coup. The plot events are mapped out, but his internal transformation feels forced and episodic rather than organic. For other writers, how do you track and reveal a character's gradual change over a long narrative? What techniques do you use to show subtle shifts in their worldview, values, or fears through their actions and dialogue, rather than just stating the change? How do you balance giving them flaws that are compelling without making them unlikable, and what are effective ways to create meaningful setbacks that actually reshape their approach?
