I'm an amateur painter trying to move from realistic landscapes into a more impressionistic style, but I'm struggling to break my habit of over-detailing everything. My attempts feel muddy and lack the vibrant, spontaneous light I admire in works by Monet and Sisley. For artists experienced with impressionism, what are the key techniques for capturing light and atmosphere rather than objects? How do you approach color mixing on the palette versus optical mixing on the canvas, and what brushwork methods help create that sense of movement and fleeting moment? Are there specific exercises for learning to see and paint the true color of shadows and reflections, moving away from local color?
