I'm a middle school science teacher developing a new, project-based STEM education unit on sustainable urban design for my seventh graders. I want the project to integrate genuine engineering design, data analysis, and civic engagement, but I'm struggling to scaffold it appropriately for a wide range of abilities. For other educators who have implemented similar interdisciplinary units, what are your most successful strategies for managing materials, facilitating collaborative group work, and assessing both the process and the final product? I'm particularly interested in how you incorporate failure and iteration as a positive part of the learning experience, and any specific resources or project ideas that have truly engaged students in applying math and science to real-world problems.
