I have a 18-foot center console and space is always at a premium. Between safety gear, fishing equipment, and personal items, I'm struggling to keep everything organized. I'm looking for practical marine storage solutions that actually work on smaller boats.
What storage systems or products have you found most effective? I'm interested in everything from under-seat storage to waterproof containers to organization systems for marine tool kits and boating emergency equipment.
Also, how do you prioritize what stays on the boat versus what you bring each trip? And what about cleaning supplies - do you keep boat cleaning supplies on board or bring them as needed?
On smaller boats, every inch counts. I've found that modular marine storage solutions work best. Stackable plastic bins that fit under seats, waterproof bags that can be compressed when not full.
For safety gear, I use dedicated bags that hang on the inside of compartments. Life jackets in one, fire extinguisher and flares in another, marine first aid kit in a third. Everything has a specific place and is easy to grab in emergency.
For tools and spare parts, I use small tackle boxes with dividers. Being able to see what's inside without opening everything saves time and space.
For safety equipment storage, I use color-coded waterproof bags. Red for fire and emergency, orange for signaling, yellow for first aid, blue for tools. Makes finding what you need quickly much easier.
I keep essential boating safety gear permanently on board: life jackets, fire extinguishers, marine VHF radio, basic marine first aid kit. Everything else comes and goes as needed.
For cleaning supplies, I keep a small kit on board - boat cleaning supplies that won't harm the marine environment. A spray bottle of boat soap, sponge, and towel in a waterproof bag.
For tool storage, I use a rolling tool bag that I can take on and off easily. My marine tool kits are organized by frequency of use - frequently used tools in easy access pockets, specialty tools in internal compartments.
Spare parts are in labeled waterproof containers. I use clear plastic boxes with colored lids - red for engine parts, blue for electrical, green for plumbing.
For boat cleaning supplies, I keep a separate bucket with lid that holds everything. Being able to grab one container for cleanup makes post-trip maintenance much easier.
For fishing gear, I use stackable plastic bins that fit perfectly under my console seats. Each bin is for a specific type of tackle - one for soft plastics, one for hard baits, one for terminal tackle.
Rod storage was my biggest challenge. I ended up installing horizontal rod holders under the gunwales. They're out of the way but easily accessible.
I keep minimal boat cleaning supplies on board - just a spray bottle of cleaner and some towels. Most cleaning happens back at the dock where I have better access to water and can properly dispose of waste.
For navigation equipment, I use a dedicated waterproof case that holds all my electronic devices, cables, and backup batteries. Everything related to navigation stays together.
Charts and navigation tools are in a separate waterproof chart case. Having all paper navigation materials in one place prevents losing important documents.
I keep a small kit of boat cleaning supplies specifically for electronics - lens cleaner and microfiber cloths for screens, contact cleaner for connections, and silica gel packets to control moisture.
