I was recently diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my knees, and my orthopedist outlined a range of treatment options from physical therapy and weight management to eventual corticosteroid injections or surgery. I'm in my late fifties and want to stay active, but the pain is starting to limit my daily activities. For others managing this condition, what combination of treatments have you found most effective for pain relief and maintaining mobility? I'm particularly interested in experiences with non-surgical interventions like specific physical therapy exercises, dietary supplements like glucosamine, or lifestyle modifications that provided meaningful improvement. How did you and your doctor decide when it was time to consider more invasive procedures?
From my experience with knee OA, combining non-surgical care often yields the best day-to-day improvement. I started structured physical therapy focusing on quadriceps and hip stabilizers, plus a modest weight loss program; over about 6 months my pain decreased and function improved enough to stay active. I did try glucosamine/chondroitin early on, but the relief was not reliable for me.
